Three Sketches in Scherzo Form (2004)

Program Notes

The composition is constructed from three brief pieces with titles that seek to illustrate a character: “Solemnly”, “Restlessly”, “As a rhapsody”. My starting point was Chopin and his Scherzos, where I have always found a combination of these three sensations: first, the solemn and slower elements, usually with chords of many notes, second, very restless and uneasy fragments, and finally elements that, with Chopin, always transport us to certain popular motifs. The idea was, then, to separate these characteristics into different pieces which, combined, would become the “Scherzo” from which they came. In a way, considering the character of the music more than in the music itself, this is a deconstruction that makes a reconstruction a-posteriori possible.
